Vanilla
A little about how we do vanilla here at Old Town Farmstand. We are pretty serious about our vanilla here!
You may have noticed we use real vanilla bean in many of our baked goods. But did you know we make our own vanilla extract from these beans? We purchase high quality imported vanilla beans and immerse them in vodka. This not only preserves the beans but plumps them up. We are able to use these beans in our baking while they spend at least 6 months to a year extracting. We then strain the spent beans and the reserve liquid is a beautiful double fold extract which we use in our cookies and other baked goods.
We don’t stop there though. Once the beans are dried out they get immersed in sugar for a few months. This creates a lovely vanilla flavored sugar that is delicious in coffee as well as in baked goods. We like to use it to sprinkle on scones, muffins and cookies.
